Water-wise and Cost-effective Gardening
Principles and Philosophy
Sustainability is cost-effective in my experience. To care for a garden in a sustainable and Bay Friendly way:
- Reduces the cost of replacing plants by building their immune systems with compost
- Reduces the cost of irrigation water by using mulch and drought tolerant plants
- Reduces the cost of buying chemicals to get rid of pests by attracting wildlife and beneficial insects
- Reduces the cost of replacing irrigation equipment by using brass or good quality plastic polyethylene
- Reduces the cost of pollution by sweeping, using hand tools, not shearing plants to have less debris, keeping debris on site in compost piles, planning one's route and work days to visit clients in close proximity
Bay Friendly, Sustainable and Green Landscaping Practices
To care for a garden in a sustainable and Bay Friendly way is to give ourselves, our children, future generations and the critters that share our gardens the gift of life. Here are ways to keep us all healthy while enjoying the beauty and fun of having a garden.
- Listening to, & education of, clients for optimum satisfaction of all
- Plant placement in healthiest locations
- Use of right amount of water for each plant
- Use of mulch to keep soil moist, organic matter breaking down around plants to feed them
- Pruning of all plants in ways to stay healthy with light, sun, air, renewal of growth
- Use of organic & least toxic fertilizing & pest/disease control
- Use of native California & drought tolerant, Mediterranean climate plants
- Use of plants, water features, and practices that attract a variety of beneficial insects, birds, bees
- Use of least toxic materials such as polyethylene pipe, copper & brass for irrigation instead of polyvinylchloride –PVC – whenever possible
- Reuse of materials you already have on site
- Keep water on site with proper drainage to feed the water table, reduce run-off to the Bay
- Being sure to meet as many needs as possible for everyone to be happy and to enjoy the garden
- As the Sustainable Business Alliance says: People. Planet. Prosperity.
